FABULOUS butter chicken! Not the most authentic I suspect, but the best I've had hands down outside of the UK.

It was a great first time experience with friendly staff, free food samples (which is uncommon), and a few handmade Indian sweets. Comfortable atmosphere and an awesome vegetarian or gluten-free selection. Jon M. Victoria, BC

Lots of food!

I tried this place the other day, and for just less than $10 you get so much food! If you are a vegetarian or just a lover of middle eastern food you must check this place out, they have lots of different options on the menu. I tried the falafel plate, which includes a salad, two huge pieces of warm pita bread, a bowl of babaganouj (or hummus if you prefer) and about 7 or 8 falafel pieces. The interior does seem a little dated, although I know this is a new restaurant ... otherwise the service was friendly and the food was tasty, I really have no complaints!

Great Experience at one of Victoria's best restaurants
By Emily88 of Victoira. BC (1 Review)
Submitted Friday, February 5, 2010 - 11:32am [Dine in]

I have been going to Al-Sultan restaurant for the past two weeks.
The food is really good, I highly recommend people to go and try it.
The staff are really lovely, patient and well educated about the type of food they serve, not like most of the Greek places in town. Lovely Arabic and Middle eastern music in the background makes the dinning experience even more interesting.
This place makes the best lamb in town, so for those of you that like lamb this is the place to go.
The prices at Al-Sultan are really reasonable, me and my friend had dinner with desert and with drinks last night, and our bell was only 35 bucks!!!

I highly encourage people to go and try it.

LOVE their pizza!  Usually stop here when I'm craving cheesy goodness - its my go to place for pizza.  This last time I went, I ordered a whole pie and it was delicious.  I normally don't like the crusts of pizzas as I find them too hard on the outside and doughy on the inside but I love the crusts on these.  Its not too crispy and not too doughy - its like eating the bread given to you at an Italian restaurant.  Yum!

When dropping in for pizza it can be hit and miss depending on their demand and when the last pie was made.  There has only been on occasion where I was disappointed by what they had left.  You can always ask them to warm up the slice for you - it tastes so much better.

Best Value in Vic!
By drheldon of Victoria BC Canada (1 Review)
Submitted Wednesday, September 22, 2010 - 8:08pm [Take-out]

ok so they just recently (Aug 2010) raised their prices by %30, most of their stuff is still under $10 and is an incredible value for the taste. I've paid double for much less many times.

The Royal Kebab is a wonderful family-run Indian diner that provides some of the best takeout in town. Their menu is somewhat limited, but what they lack in diversity they make up for in flavour and price for what they do offer. Butter chicken, with fresh jasmine rice (that almost offers a hint of saffron), and a tasty salad runs at less than $10. Before they raised their prices, the same dish was a stunning $6.25 and that included tax! I felt guilty eating such a wonderful meal at such a low price. I often thought of suggesting to the modest owners that they raise their price, which would've gone against my selfishness as a customer. Alas someone beat me to it, but even at $10 their meals are a great value!

their samosas are still $1.25 and tasty tasty! so i usually get the butter chicken and a samosa or 2. don't judge me for my appetite lol i'm a big guy. and their food is seriously delicious!

If you're looking for a great takeout place with a neighbourhood feel, and you don't mind waiting 15 to 20 minutes for some fresh food made with great care, then check them out. It goes against my judgement again to even write this review, because then more people will know about this little gem. But they deserve the praise!

I found Royal Kebab Grill is the best in twon, quality food, mor portion than enough, and the price you cannot beat any where. I found the staff are very polite and helpful. You dine there or take out are the same as if you dine in. I visit the resturant at least 3 times a week. It is my favorit place to eat and to chat with very friendly staff from the owner till the epmloyees. God bless you and keep it up.

David: I saw the signage go up way back in October. They said they'd be open in November, then December. Their menu had Donairs spelled Doner, the prices were cheap. It used to be a Fish and Chip shop called Shag's. Then, one day, I saw an OPEN sign flashing and decided to check it out but as I approached I saw a piece of paper taped to the door explaining that they were closed for personal reasons. All this wasn't enough to dissuade me, I had tried a Kebab when I was in London and I've been hooked ever since. Finally, one day after work, I'd stopped in at a friend's place for a few beers and was feeling a bit hungry for some reason so I suggested we go and see if the Royal Kebab was open and sure enough it was. There were even people in there....eating no less. The menu is small and simple with a few spelling mistakes that are more endearing than annoying. The choices are simple, some samosas and kebabs, beef or chicken. Nothing over $8. There are no alcoholic beverages served that I noticed. So I ordered a beef kebab and a samosa from the lady behind the counter, paid and sat down to wait for my meal. I was offered the samosa right away so I took it and wolfed it back. It was fantastic, and that was a good sign. My kebab came up and I took it back to my table to investigate. There was a small crisp salad next to a bed of saffron yellow looking rice and two beef patties. The salad was nothing special but very fresh and with a delicious tangy dressing. The rice turned out to be just perfect, a little buttery. The beef patties were absolutely delicious with bits of onion in them and middle eastern spices. I don't know if it technically qualified as a kebab but it sure was tasty and I would recommend this food to anyone. The only question is: when exactly are they open? I guess you'll just have to drive by and try your luck. They seem like sincere, good folk though and they serve a tasty treat so I hope they can stick it out in Victoria's sometimes trying restaurant market and I will definitely be snacking there again.

Poutine? In Esquimalt? The area where I grew up where all you used to be able to find was fish and chips and Chinese food?

Not bad, not bad at all. The burgers here are big and generous, and the fries are lovely - and the price is right.  There are even some guys who work the grill that have Quebecois accents, making me feel a-ok about our choice for dinner.

A warning - like the similar location on Davie in Vancouver, the small poutine is big and the medium is bigger than your head...be prepared!

Siam Thai Restaurant Victoria

Hands down best Thai food in town
By scotts7777 of Victoria (5 Reviews)
Submitted Tuesday, June 15, 2010 - 12:30am [Dine in]

I've been going to Siam for the past 7 years or so, and have to say that this is the best Thai food I've ever had. I've eaten at Thai places in Vancouver, Seattle and many others in Victoria, and every time I try another Thai restaurant there is no comparison. The place out in Sidney is quite good (Sabhai Thai) I would call it my second choice, but Siam is #1.

The food at Siam is mouthwateringly delicious. They use flat thick delicious noodles for their Phad Thai and the flavour and consistency of the sauce is perfect. They have absolutely nailed the flavour for their Phad Thai dish, it just melts in your mouth. The food is always hot and fresh, served on clean hot plates. Another favorite is the Siam Curry and again they have perfected the recipe, with the perfect amount of Bamboo shoots, peppers and perfect consistency of the curry soup. One of my favorite things is the spice-rack, available on request for free - which has 4 spicy condiments you can add to your dish (not sure what they are). You also request the spiciness of your food when you order (mild, medium or hot), but the spice rack allows you to fine tune. We always order a white rice with the Siam Curry. Although I've only tried one of the desert items, the Deep-Fried Banana (not sure what the actual menu item name is) I cannot describe how sweet and delicious this is - served with vanilla ice cream. We rarely order drinks but the Thai Ice Tea is good too.

The service at Siam is always excellent, without exception. They never let your water get empty before someone rushes over to top you off. Everyone is really friendly and polite.

The value is very good - An order of 2 dishes with rice (Phad Thai, Siam Curry and medium white rice) after all taxes and including 15% tip it works out to around $34. This will leave two people stuffed, possibly with a leftover for midnight snack. For the quality of food, this is a bargain.

The ambiance is just right. I love the brick walls and cool ceiling woodwork. They transformed a piece of Victoria history into an authentic Thai haven. They dim the lights slightly in the evening and keep the atmosphere very relaxed and calm. The restaurant always smells so damn good. My one complaint would be when you get stuck sitting next to the front entrance in the Winter months it can get cold with people constantly coming and going. This is about the only thing I could ever possibly come up with as a negative about Siam. I can't recommend this place enough, it is my favorite restaurant, hands down.

What a great hidden gem for Chinese Food
By victoriafoodie of Victoria British Columbia Canada (1 Review)
Submitted Thursday, October 21, 2010 - 10:12pm [Dine in]

We just moved to Victoria and have been eating our way around town.
This spot was recommended to us and was amazing.
Service was sketchy at best as the waitress seemed a bit distracted, but the food made up for her shortcomings by 100%.

Home made spring rolls with plum sauce already in them was the starter. This was the coolest thing since sliced bread. I have never seen them made with the sauce inside before.

Wonton soup was shared by all with the freshest won ton dumplings I have ever tasted. Shrimp filled and not the usual 90% cabbage and 10% baby shrimp, these were all fresh shrimp.

Chinese vegetables followed and they were all fresh and tossed in an amazing sauce
We also ordered a Satay Chicken chow mein but had to bring it home as we were stuffed by them.

Everything we ordered was amazing.
The decor was traditional boring Canadian Chinese restaurant but who cares about that.
They need a young talkative active waitress and a coat of paint then this place will be lined up out the door
The bill was only $43 for 3 of us, so no complaints at all

In 1916 Maude Hunter’s established the first commercial store at the intersection of Shelbourne and Cedar Hill Cross Road.

Many Victorians walking up Shelbourne St. would stop at the little store to warm themselves in front of the wood stove, have a chat with Maude and other neighbors before venturing on their way.

These were the days when the corner store was a local gathering place, where you could post a letter, pick an apple out of the barrel, buy candies or groceries, and 5 cent spending money went a long way.

In 1921 the first electric street light north of the Victoria boundary was installed at Shelbourne and Cedar Hill Cross Rd.  When it was known as “Hunter’s Corner”.  Young people congregated outside under this street light on summer weekends.

In 1923 Maude’s father, Captain Hunter and her brother George, added a tea room to the store which housed 2 or 3 little tables.  Maude is remembered as a generous and considerate person, and ran her store and tea room until 1929, when she left the community and moved to Toronto.

As late as 1960 remnants of the original root cellar where visible on the property

In 1986 Maude Hunter’s Neighbourhood Pub was established as the second neighbourhood pub in Victoria, the first being Spinnakers.  Next year Maude Hunter’s will be proudly celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Great place for a quick lunch or dinner. Awesome Jamaican patties, great curries and cool owners.

After reading some of the negative reviews we were hesitant to visit the Korean Gardens restaurant. In fact, we first tried to find a Korean restaurant downtown instead based on those reviews. Luckily that restaurant was no longer in business and a hunger for Korean food drove us to the Korean Garden.

Contrary to what others have experienced, the waitresses were prompt, yet patient, as we navigated the menu looking for dishes similar to those we were familiar with from other Korean restaurants. Once ordered, food began arriving quickly. The food tasted great, and the size of the dishes was average for this type of cuisine. All through the meal the service remained superb. It's a rare restaurant where the staff will go out of their way to make a two year old, our son n this case, feel at home.

Korean Gardens

Korean GardensThis family owned neighbourhood restaurant has created a reputation for serving up delicious, reasonably priced food for fifteen years. The menu has an extensive variety of authentic Korean and Japanese dishes and includes sushi from the full service sushi bar. A Korean category was added to the “Best of Victoria” in 2003. The Korean Gardens was instantly voted the best Korean restaurant and has maintained that title every year since. Joey would like to thank Victorians for giving them this honour and encourage people who haven’t experienced their food to come and judge for themselves. Open daily for lunch and dinner from 11:30 am, Sunday dinner at 5:00 p.m., located at 3945 Quadra St. at Reynolds. Phone 250-744-3311.
