The FOX Showroom Pub

The Fox found its residence at The Red Lion Inn during the mid 1980's. (The hotel was erected in 1967) Prior to The Fox becoming naked as we currently know it, the pub was home to a steakhouse for many years. Booking exotic dancers exclusively through Stripper Entertainment since changing to an exotic format in 1987, the bar flourished throughout the 90's featuring A-Circuit dancers. The Fox fast became a starting point for many up n' coming superstars in the adult entertainment industry. A multitude of Playboy Bunnies, Penthouse Pets, Hustler Honey's and adult film stars all got their start at The Fox.

One of the last strip clubs to feature a bath tub on the stage, wet and wild encores were always a crowd pleaser at The Fox. Chants of "Shower! Shower! Shower!" eventually played favourite to audience demands, and the bath tub saw it's final days in the latter part of 1993. The original stand-up cylindrical shower that accompanied the bath tub was replaced by a bird bath, and shower shows remained a staple for The Fox encores.

During the Commonwealth Games of August 1994, The Fox hosted it's first Amateur Contest to a full house and a line up of 6 contestants. Rene Summers was crowned Ms. Nude Amateur Victoria and a new chapter had begun for The Fox. Amateur Nights were held four times annually and gradually grew from a one night stand into a three night endeavor. All of Western Canada's new talent took their first dance steps on The Fox Pub stage.

The latter part of the 90's saw business at an all time high. The Fox set high standards within the exotic entertainment industry via such promotions as; Octopussy, The Dirty Dozen, Fox Hunt Rookie Competition, Ms. Nude BC Preliminaries and Annual Wet Tee's. Of course the Amateur Nights remained the favourite amongst local Victorians.

Sat, November 10, 2001 at 1:15 AM - a fire was reported burning in Diego's Lounge located above The Fox Pub. Within an hour Diego's and the Red Lion's Cold Beer & Wine Store were completely engulfed in flames. The Victoria Fire Department stabilized the inferno after hours of fighting the blaze, but the damage was done. The Fox was officially closed down.

Sun, April 6, 2003 at 12:00 PM
- The Fox officially re-opened. Continuing an exclusive relationship with Stripper Entertainment, The Fox features all of Western Canada's finest exotic dancers as well as big name acts touring from abroad. Appealing to the sports fan as well as the traditional strip club attendee, all NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA and World Cup Soccer games are available to watch. Pay Per View Boxing and UFC events have fast become major engagements at The Fox. Please call (250) 475 7388 for any questions you may have.

Inside the FOX ...
With an 'in-the-round' ambience, The Fox stage is situated in the center of the room surrounded by two tier seating and a capacity for 225 people. The Fox features four big screen tv's as well as four projection screens allowing premiere viewing of all sporting events. Fifteen tv screens located throughout the bar give every seat a great view whether you're watching what's on the stage or off. A heated smoking patio allows The Fox to abide by local non-smoking bylaws while pleasing our smoking customers as well. A full menu is available seven days a week, with kitchen hours: Noon til 8:30PM Sunday thru Thursday, and Noon til 10:30PM Friday and Saturday. State of the art sound n' lighting make for a thumpin atmosphere and our friends at Dial-A-Driver give you a safe and affordable drive home if need be.

Big Bad John's

The world famous Big Bad John's is an authentic hillbilly bar where you can relax and let your hair down. Add your own memento to the walls and make sure to throw your peanut shells on the floor! Be sure to bring your sense of humor and you'll see why BBJ's has reached legendary status worldwide.

I'd also like to mention the Strathcona hotel has its own liquor store, I went there once and the guy refused to break 100 bill on a 70 dollar bottle of vodca, then I tried to pay with a card and he told me its to late its already 11. It was 5 minutes to 11. They are pricks in their im sorry buy its true. If you want to pay twice as much and have some smartass intentionally try and ruin your night its the place for you to go. I tried calling the manager and everything no one would even apologize. - Disclaimer this is a personal review

Our service is attentive, warm and unpretentious. Our people are passionate about delivering food and experiences that will keep our guests coming back again and again.

Chef Rob Feenie is part of Cactus Club Cafe’s world-class, award-winning culinary team and he resides as Executive Chef at the Test Kitchen.

Chef Feenie blends his talent for creating elegant, globally inspired cuisine with his passion for simple dishes using fresh, local ingredients. In both 2014 and 2015, Cactus Club Cafe was named Best Downtown Restaurant in Vancouver Magazine’s Restaurant Awards.

Since 1988

Like many before him, Richard Jaffray spent a good amount of his teenage years waiting tables. By the time he turned 19, he realized he had a passion for the restaurant business that could go far beyond a part time job.

In 1986, Richard opened his first restaurant, Café Cucamongas, selling cappuccinos, sandwiches and ice cream. In 1988, at the age of 23, he sold Cucamongas and opened the first Cactus Club Cafe in North Vancouver, British Columbia. The goal was to offer a fun, upscale restaurant where you would be welcomed with great food and friendly service in a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere.

In its first 25 years, Cactus Club Cafe grew to include 25 locations and employed 2,000 people. Today, the restaurant is a national brand and is experiencing the fastest growth in its history.

Although some things have changed through the years, the original Cactus philosophy remains intact: continuous improvement and the highest quality is sought in every menu item, every design element and every aspect of the guest experience.

Clive's Classic Lounge

A Little About Us

Clive’s Classic Lounge was established in 2008 after a major renovation project that took place in the Chateau Victoria Hotel. With this new Lounge a new vision was born; Clive’s Classic Lounge began its journey to become not only one of the top cocktail lounges in Victoria, but also to be recognized in the global cocktail community as one of the top 10 cocktail lounges in the world (Tales of the Cocktail 2011, 2012, and 2014). We are proud to be a contributing part of not only the Victoria cocktail culture but also the West Coast cocktail culture. Our passion for cocktailing is fueled by the opportunity to introduce our guests to a magnificent cocktail experience with each visit. We stand by the belief that if an ingredient does not exist to the standards we need, we simply make it – from house made bitters, syrups, shrubs and liqueurs to fresh squeezed – to – order citrus and bottled soda’s and tonics. We are constantly in search of new products and ingredients to keep Clive’s Classic Lounge on the forefront of this liquid culture.

“People always ask me ‘What is a Browns Socialhouse?’ We serve fresh, tasty food in a lively room that’s fun, full of energy and designed to be as comfy as my living room… without the dog hair” – Scotty Morison

Eat . Drink . Repeat

In June 2004, Scott Morison first opened the doors to Browns on Lonsdale in North Vancouver. Scott set out to create a business model where people who had invested their time working in and operating restaurants could own a piece of the pie. In other words, every Browns Socialhouse is owned and operated by locals who have a vested interest in their community and the success of the brand.

Today Browns Socialhouse continues to design extraordinary restaurants and lounges. Scott incorporates global attitudes and trends with classic styling and core design principles. He brings a unique approach to design with special attention to ergonomics and comfortable décor.

Browns restaurants are constantly searching for new opportunities and ideas to create incredible restaurants. It is our goal to leave people hooked on the atmosphere and ambiance, as well as the unique items that we provide.

Wine Vault!

All the wine in our wine vault is kept fresh with our Enomatic wine system. Custom built in Italy, the technology enables a bottle of wine to be opened and protected from oxidation, which allows us to pour bottles of wine that most establishments are only able to offer by the bottle!

The Pub

Opened in 1862 as the Bank of British Columbia, the building remained a bank until 1988 under a different array of banking establishments’ control. Of all the bank employees to work at this location in the 126 years it was a bank the most notable was, the bard of the Yukon, Robert Service.

The Man

Robert Service was born in Lancashire, England in 1874 and was the eldest of ten children. While still a young boy, the family moved to Glasgow, Scotland, where Robert first attended school. He was mainly a solitary child who immersed himself in books and his own imagination, yet still found time to raise a ruckus by getting into scraps with other children.

It was during his sixth birthday that Robert first amazed his family and himself with his ability to create rhyming verse, which came in the form of a spontaneous grace during dinner. Throughout his school days Robert immersed himself in the writings of Shakespeare, Burns and Longfellow, all filled with adventure and declamatory verses.

By the age of fourteen, Robert had left school and started an apprenticeship with a bank in Scotland. It was here that he found himself with extra time during his shifts and started to devote more time to his poems, of which over a dozen were published in the local paper.

In 1896 at the age of twenty-two, Robert resigned from his position at the bank and moved to Canada in search of new travels and adventure. During the next eight years he wandered up and down the West coast of Canada and the U. S. trying his hand at a variety of jobs such as farming, ranching, manual labor, and running a general store. All of these experiences would provide material for his writings.

By 1903 Robert would move to Victoria. Tired of working and searching for an easier life, he accepted a job with the Canadian Bank of Commerce (what is now the Bard & Banker Public House). During his employment at this branch, Robert would spend his nights sleeping on the vault, which was located at the top of the staircase, hence the name of the room The Vault. Robert would later transfer to a different branch in Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory.

It was here in the Yukon when Robert almost met his demise at the hands of a bank teller, thinking he was a robber he tried to shoot him in the head but narrowly missed, providing the inspiration for The shooting of Dan McGrew. A month later Robert attended a party where he heard a fantastic story, giving birth to the poem we know as The Cremation of Sam McGee.

Robert’s poems would become so popular and profitable that he was able to leave his position with the bank and focus solely on his writing. By the start of the First World War in 1914, the Toronto Star had asked him to be a correspondent and once again in search of adventure, he accepted. At the end of the war Robert stayed in Europe, living most of the remainder of his life in France, which is partly why we have a strong French influence on our wine list.

Robert Service died in 1958, still writing and publishing poems into his mid-eighties and although he lived a large portion of his life in Europe, he is still widely referred to as the Bard of the Yukon. Through his writings and banking career this is how the name for our pub came to be the Bard & Banker.

Happy hoppy hour, Victoria! We’re looking forward to serving you soon.

Bringing beer local. In just 18 months, the Spinnakers team managed to put together what became Canada’s first in-house brewpub of the modern era.

Bringing Beer Local. Spinnakers was established to fill a gap in the Canadian beer industry. Back in the early 1980s, the market was dominated by the “Big 3″: Labbatt, Molson and Carling O’Keefe. But, one of Spinnakers’ founding partners, John Mitchell, was about to create waves in the brewing world.

Laws that prohibited any individual or company from being involved in the manufacturing or retailing of beverage alcohol in British Columbia became a matter for review when, in June, 1982, Mitchell opened a small brewery on the property of Sewell’s Marina in West Vancouver to brew and supply real ales to his Troller Pub, located down the street.

Although this first foray into commercial brewing did not last, Mitchell was inspired and eager to persue his inspiration. A September 1982 trip to the UK in search of better brewing equipment also yielded a suitcase full of beers, a couple bottles each of 14 different UK brands. These were shared one October evening with a number of beer aficionados in a pub, the Pickled Onion, located in a Dunbar residence on the west side of Vancouver. The host, a wine and spirits agent provided accompaniments and others brought along a few beers of their own to share. Working our way through the beers, discussing the merits of each and speculating on recipes, the group had a grand evening as we also tried another 5 or 6 North American bottled beers and finally settled into the draft canisters of home brew brought by a couple of the participants.
This was the evening that Spinnakers was conceived out of a realization that we could have access to such an amazing array of flavours. With the best beers of the evening having been provided by the home brewers, it was evident that the technology was in the room and the task at hand was to find a location and set about the process of building Canada’s first in-house brewpub of the modern era.

The process started with a review of Provincial liquor laws and a visit to Victoria’s City Hall where we quickly learned that a brewery / pub combination was not an allowed land use anywhere within the city limits. Subsequent conversations with Victoria’s Mayor and a few Councilors revealed a perspective that whilst the idea of a neighbourhood public house with an in-house brewery might be interesting, given that there were no examples to look at we were facing a very real fear of the unknown, that is, it may be a nice idea, but not in my backyard, thank you. One councilor summed it up nicely by telling us to find a neighbourhood that did not exist so that there would be no pushback and that those who lived next to the proposed brewpub would be doing so out of their own volition.

With this in mind, the current location at the foot of Catherine Street, on the edge of Lime Bay, overlooking Victoria’s harbour was singled out as a preferred potential location. Adjacent lands were derelict industrial, the remnants of a long closed shingle mill, an oil tank farm and underutilized rail yards. Long considered the wrong side of the bridge, Vic West had long been ignored by officials at the City. Suggestions of the current location resulted in the City Planning Department calling for a new community plan for Vic West before consideration could be given to any proposal. Having a background in private practise involving community planning work proved useful as we were able to return 6 weeks later with a vision as to how the surrounding areas might unfold over the next 20 years and how a neighbouthood brewpub might fit into the community.

Presentations to the Vic West Community Association resulted in the association conducting a neighbouhood poll indicating a very high level of support. This led to the development of a set of drawings and applications to create a zoning bylaw specific to the needs of a craft brewery and brewpub.

At the same time, a process was commenced with the Provincial government’s department of Liquor Control and Licensing which led to the creation of a set of Guidelines for Licensing Brewpubs in British Columbia. It turned out that previously authorized Horseshoe Bay operation was allowed to proceed because it was not expected to succeed. The advent of another pending application caused the General Manager to require the development of more formal guidelines for licensing as well as a need to amend the Liquor Control and Licensing Act to provide an on-going exclusion to Tied House Provisions which were embedded in the Act to ensure a legal separation between manufacturers and liquor licensees.

At the level of the Federal Government it was also necessary to seek an amendment to the federal Excise Act which stated that the only means of communication between the manufacturer of commodities subject to Excise duties was by highway. The Troller Pub / Horshoe Bay Brewing scenario complied with the Federal Excise Act as the beer was kegged at the brewery and then trucked down the street to the pub. Spinnakers, as a result of an Federal Excise Act amendment, contained within a February 1984 Federal Budget, was the first in-house liquor manufacturing facility to take advantage of the new provisions, ultimately paving the way for brewpubs, wineries and more recently, craft distilleries with attached licensed premises to exist.

From idea to opening day, over a period of 18 months, the Spinnakers team managed to put together what became Canada’s first in-house brewpub of the modern era. We think it was worth the effort. We trust that you will appreciate the results of our efforts.

Christie's Pub
Christie's Heritage Pub At The Carriage House

CHRISTIE’S YESTERDAY

The Christie's house, "Sandolphon", was built about 1898, by Eldridge Christie. The decorative and picturesque roofline with the gables and towers are in the Queen Anne style.

The Christie's family lived here until 1909. Eldridge Christie, a renowned carriage builder, undoubtedly realized that the days of his trade were numbered with the coming of the motor vehicle. So, around 1909, he moved his business to Ashcroft. There he built and repaired horse drawn coaches for the famous B.X. Stagelines. The Lady Dufferin, built in 1910 by Eldrige, is the most famous of the B.X. Stage coaches, having run regular service between Lillooet and Ashcroft, when it was known as B.C. Express Company Number 14. It can still be seen on display at the Red Coach Inn, 100 mile House, B.C.

Christie’s Fort Street home remained in the family until 1948 and later was made over into apartments. When it seemed demolition might be inevitable, the house was purchased by local business interests. It formed the anchor for the major structural additions for the Christie’s Carriage House Pub where it perpetuates the historic theme with carriages on display.

The 1905 Rockaway Coupe, on display by the Pub’s front entrance, was restored by carriage builders at Gananoque Carriage Company in Ontario. It has 5 seats (2 vis-a-vis, 1 folding) and 3 drop windows. It is one of the few hardtop carriages in B.C. Most of the carriages built in Victoria at the turn of the century were soft top carriages.

CHRISTIE’S TODAY

In 1986, a gorgeously restored Christie’s opened for business. Spiffed up in high Edwardian fashion, with dark woods, stained glass, brass rails, a patterned ceiling designed in stamped foil, striped wallpaper and fireplaces - Christie’s accurately recreates the lush comforts that Eldridge and his family knew.

Essentially designed in an open plan, there are several half-walls that create a variety of nooks and crannies that can accommodate various social needs.

In 1993, due to the popularity of open air patios, Christie’s created a fabulous patio, complete with heaters and a fireplace for Victoria’s mild winters and open to the beautiful sunshine in the summer.

Today, there is always some-thing happening at Christie’s, food or drink specials everyday. The kitchen offers pub classics such as fish and chips or bangers and mash, and more contemporary fare like fresh fish tacos, always with a generous plate of quality food at a reasonable price. Many a beer are on tap - thirty four the last time we counted, representing a wide spectrum of local and regional microbreweries. Or you may prefer one of our unique daily special cocktails. Gluten free menu available.

Christie’s Carriage House Pub recreates turn-of-the-century Victoria with flair, charm and comfort. It is truly the living room of the neighbourhood - a place where friends meet, chat and share good times. Drop in - it's in the neighbourhood.

Yates St. Taphouse

Yates Street Taphouse - Pub Victoria, BC

Welcome to Yates Street Taphouse

Our roots go way back.

We are located in the oldest continuously operating hotel in British Columbia – a location that boasts a long and honorable history in the service industry. This Victoria pub has provided comfort, companionship, and cold pints to miners and tourists dating back to 1862. It was a place where you could get a good meal, share a laugh, and rest your weary bones after a long hard day.

We’re pleased to say that things haven’t changed much here in the last hundred and fifty years. Although the wooden floors and canvas walls have been replaced with brick, stone, and leather, the philosophy and values remain the same.

We believe in the value of good food and good company. We think that a hard day’s work deserves a good pint with close friends, that a good meal should leave you feeling full, and that you should still have enough money left over to go to a movie or buy another round.

We believe that family comes first, friends a close second, and that it’s better to buy local for a whole lot of reasons.

We’re thrilled to champion the great traditions started here so many years ago, and hope to be doing so a hundred and fifty years from now.

Welcome to the Taphouse, and please keep coming back.
