The Fat Diminisher

Four Mile’s Real Ales

Our ales are brewed in the traditional English fashion, using only barley, wheat, hops and pure water. Our yeast is a centuries-old strain developed by monks in the north of the British Isles. Four Mile’s ales are brewed in accordance with ancient purity laws—no additives or preservatives!

Four Mile Brewery uses the Peter Austin Brick Kettle Brewing System. This system is based on a philosophy is to make World Class Beers in a system rugged, reliable and easy to operate, clean and maintain. There are more than 100 Peter Austin Brewing Systems installed worldwide. The key to the success of the system has been its simplicity, making it much easier to learn and maintain than most other systems. All brew house, fermentation and conditioning tanks in the brewing system are fabricated to our specifications based on each projects individual needs. We are the only brewery in Western North America using the unique Peter Austin system.

Our Beers

beersRemember the lyrics from Marie Osmond, “I’m a little bit country. And I’m a little bit rock ‘n roll.”?

You don’t? Are you really that much of a newbie hipster beer geek? You made it this far in life without knowing who Donnie & Marie are? Good for you. Have a beer. Preferably one of ours.

But to paraphrase Marie’s lyric line, our beers are a little bit British. And a little bit west coast hoppy vibe-oh-licious.

We brew our beers in the traditional English fashion. We stay the course on only using barley, wheat, hops and pure water. Our malts are all of British origin. Our yeast strain is centuries old. We brew in accordance with ancient purity laws. No additives. No preservatives.

Then we add a little bit of West Coast rock & roll. We use New World hops, primarily sourced from the Pacific Northwest. And of course we are using only clean, clear water from beautiful British Columbia. And of course we add in orcas and marmots chopped up in tiny pieces for extra flavour. KIDDING! We just wanted to see if you were paying attention. Have another beer.

Summer Wheat Ale

summerwheatOur summer wheatie sweetie. A mellow golden guzzle with a laid-back hoppy glide. A clear head on cool shoulders. A swig of sunshine that rolls along the tongue in a soft easy-going manner. If it could hum a tune, it would. This beer screams for buttery corn on the cob, mussels marinière, steamed Dungeness crab, or a day-old bean burrito you just remembered in your knapsack.

4.5% ABV
24 IBU unfiltered

English Strong Ale

englishA robust nutty whack of the full-on strong personalities of malts and hops. There’s a bit of a wrestling match going on to see who’s nuttier, but they decide on a harmonious truce, and call for an alliance of flavours where no one is the conqueror and everybody wins. This beer can tango with a mellow pork pie, but it will also head-butt with the bold spice of Jerk chicken. If called upon it will make that last piece of stale dried-up pizza taste frigging amazing.

6.9% ABV
50 IBU unfiltered

Best British Ale

You will be tempted to standup and sing the British national anthem when you drink this beer. We call it our Stiff Upper Sip. This is the “godfather” of true British brewing, and our tribute to Peter Austin who invented the brewing system we use at 4 Mile Brewing Company. The beer’s good breeding shows through in the exquisite balance of English malt & hops. We cask condition this beer, meaning it is naturally carbonated. You can serve it whatever temperature you want, but if you know your stuff, it should be served warmer than the average North American beer – somewhere between inner thigh and a rib eye steak left on the counter for an hour. This is a true session beer. Think an afternoon at the lake with friends, good cheese, cold cuts and pickles and later, the balls to crack open the mysterious Tupperware container with what looks to be mac & cheese…maybe.

ABV 4.25%
24 IBU unfiltered

Brown Ale

brownThis is our Grande Damn Wham. A big bodacious classic English style brown ale. Could we use more superlatives? Why yes we can. Five luscious malts including crystal, chocolate & roasted barley are nuzzled together to create a full-bodied malty beer with notes of caramel, mocha and coffee and chocolate. It saturates the palate, rolls off the sides and down the gullet. It’s an affable accomplice to a hearty beef stew, bacon gorgonzola risotto, or a day at the beach eating peanut butter cookie dough right out of the tube wrapper.

ABV 5.3 %
40 IBU unfiltered

India Pale Ale

indiaThis one is Beelzebub, our big bad boy. It would drive a chromed-out Harley if it could. Devilishly bitter sweet. A Yank style IPA. Edgy, aggressive and opinionated. It totally epitomizes the new genre of North America IPAs. Light copper colour with an explosion of Summit, Cascade, and Simcoe & Amarillo hops. Despite its dominant hoppy eccentricity, the beer holds the road with a great balance between the malts & hops. Bring it on when you’re going to kill a plate of spicy Mexican enchiladas, kimchee cabbage rolls or you’re packing a food cart über hot dog back to the loft for dinner.

ABV 6.0 %
70 IBU *Super mucho dry hopping

Pale Ale

paleThis beer will give your taste buds a vigorous grapefruit spank. Yes, it’s had a proper British upbringing, but with a sharp left turn. That’s where its West Coast hoppy vibe comes in. British malts rumba nicely with the best quality West Coast hops. A decidedly moreish quaff of malty madness. A grassy roll in the hay topped off with a crisp citrus slap. Hoppy but not over the toppy. Smack your lips and dig into a wasabi-laced sushi platter, deep dish key lime pie or a tin of chili right out of the can at 2 a.m.

ABV 5.1%
Pale Ale 38 IBU *Mucho dry hopping

Golden Ale

goldenWe call this beer our crispy tart bombshell. It is a satisfying golden blond Canadian style ale. Nice long legs with a crisp dry clean finish. Just a flash of sweet. Very approachable. A subtle balance between malt & a blend of three North American hops. So highly drinkable you just might end the glass with a deep sigh. This beer loves nothing better than a monster bowl of fresh steamed clams, a midday brunch of smoked salmon eggs Benny, or a midnight fridge raid for something that’s not gone green that you can fire into the Panini grill.

Hoyne Brewery Victoria

A history of quality.

Very few people get to study craft beer under one of the pioneers of the North American micro-brewery movement. Frank Appleton taught me what it means to make great beer, and I am truly grateful for that.

Frank and I set up the brewery in Victoria’s historic Swans Hotel in 1989. When he moved on to build other breweries, I took on the role of Brewmaster and began honing my craft.

In 1998, I founded the brewery at Canoe Brewpub. I brewed there for 13 years, focusing on developing award-winning beers and fostering a sense of community between brewers and beer enthusiasts. For me, it is community that really counts: getting together with fellow beer lovers, talking shop, sharing a few pints, and having some laughs. I bring this fundamental passion to every batch I brew.

“Make great beer,” Frank told me. “The rest will follow.” While my understanding of the craft has matured over the years, Frank gave me the foundation I needed. I strive to create interesting and thoroughly enjoyable beer. Beer that looks good in the glass, feels good in the mouth, and lifts the spirit—and for that, I am proud.

Brewed in science.

There is a science to brewing, so it follows that there are geeks among us. I count myself as one. We can jaw on endlessly about the details, hailing the happy embrace of malt and hops, bitter and sweet, light and dark. We wax poetic about alpha and beta acids, conversion temperatures, micro-organisms, valves and attenuation.

But science can be art and a passionate brewer understands balance. We understand where and when compromise is possible or necessary. Some of us even get all misty-eyed and philosophical when trying to explain how we pour (pun intended) our hearts into making the absolute best beer we can. That is, of course, the reason we brew.

I make beer. Delicious beer. It is a lovely marriage between art and science, and, although each batch is here for a short time, not a long time, I pride myself on the fact that what I make brings people together. And when people get together, amazing things happen.

For all the right reasons.

I make beer because I love drinking great beer. I was drawn to the craft because I see beer as a metaphor for the best things in life. To me, it represents enjoyment and community. It means gathering around a table, a fire, or maybe just another person drinking a beer. It means sharing time, stories, music, and laughter.

Meeting over a beer could mean skimming along the surface of a friendship or delving straight to the marrow of a relationship, but it doesn’t really matter because having a beer means getting together, and that is what really counts.

Beyond all of that, the craft of brewing intrigues me. It is a balance between history and science, between tradition and technology. It is hands-on. It gets hot in the brewery: the work is physical and the results tangible. Brewing beer is an honest craft. Science is the backbone, history the heart.

And beer is history. Our craft is founded on the skills honed by the centuries of men and women who committed themselves to brewing. Those who grow barley and hops, who design and innovate equipment, and those pioneers who have—pint by delicious pint—built a framework that binds this industry, and pushes it forward. Some would say we stand on the shoulders of giants, but that is not how most brewers would put it. We are largely a humble lot, who simply like making and sharing beer. That is the essence of the craft.

Summer Haze Honey Hefe

On a sunny summer day, just like today, the Great and Wonderful Oz set sail in his hot-air balloon.  As ballast, some say, his basket was loaded to the brim with Hoyne Hefeweizen.  After lift-off, his thirst gathered like a summer storm.  Quenching it, he lightened his load, and found himself carried delightfully away.  The rest, as they say, is his story.

This beautiful seasonal is now available in your local store…ALL summer long!

Hoyner Pilsner

On the third night, I handed my sweetie a tall slender Pilsner. Perfectly poured. While holding it up and gazing either at it, or through it at me, she said softly, “you are so fine to me.” It was hard to tell if she meant to be heard. “Ambiguity, thy Name is Woman”, I nearly uttered. Whether she was speaking to me, or to the beer, it was merely semantics. The deal was sealed.  I would make it my life”s work to make fine beer.

Dark Matter

Deep inside the Hadron Collider physicists hurtle sub-atomic particles with lightning speed on a collision course with each other. They do so in the pursuit of pure science, in the hope of one day being able to unlock the mystery of the elusive unseen fabric upon which our universe is embroidered: Dark Matter.

Down Easy Pale Ale

And in the beginning, word came forth, “Let there be ale, and let it be the colour of barley in the summer sun, and let it paradoxically both quench and create great thirst.” Who are we to disagree? Sit back, take it easy, enjoy the slow ride.

Wet Hopped Pale Ale Wolf Vine

Humulus Lupulus, wolf vine, or more commonly, the hop plant, shares with its namesake a rather interesting trait: after a decidedly unthreatening beginning to life, upon maturity each species stakes their claim. And with neither mercy nor conscience, will tirelessly strive for, and usually achieve, total territorial domination.

This is a limited release, only available in September during the hop harvest.

Voltage Espresso Stout

Shaner D and I doing the live circuit at Beer fest, alternating the spro and stout:  “Let’s make a beer with shocking polarity.”  “Black on black” I agreed.  Tommy D, always the conductor, kept us grounded with his three-pronged wisdom: “Like love, boys, it starts with a spark.  When the field is fully charged, flip the switch: Voltage!”

This last batch is almost done until next fall-get some while it lasts!
